Description

This book is for instructors who think that most calculus textbooks are too long. In writing the book, James Stewart asked himself: What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Second Edition, offers a concise approach to teaching calculus that focuses on major concepts, and supports those concepts with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. The book is only 900 pages–two-thirds the size of Stewart’s other calculus texts, and yet it contains almost all of the same topics. The author achieved this relative brevity primarily by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the book’s website, www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the more compact size, the book has a modern flavor, covering technology and incorporating material to promote conceptual understanding, though not as prominently as in Stewart’s other books. ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS features the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart’s textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world.

I used this for Calculus 1,2, and 3 and I felt it was pretty useful. I had to buy it though, so I will agree that the book is kind of overpriced (almost all college textbooks are). But it’s a pretty nice deal since I used it for 3 semesters. I never looked at previous editions, so I can’t comment on the differences. I would also highly recommend PatrickJMT.com and KhanAcademy.org for supplemental material.

Even though I rented this book, it came like it was brand new! I could not believe the book was in such a great condition for me to rent.

Great book. Its content explains subject matter better than the instructor can at times. Excellent appendix including formulas and a huge list of common integrals. Great for a Calc I,II and possibly III for engineers.

  4. Juliana Vazquez (verified owner) –

It was pretty cheap and I will be able to use it for 3 classes so it definitely pays off to own the book.

I got it through webassign so not going to buy it twice on amazon. But still it is a good book. Kinda sucks because I really want the kindle version instead of the webassign version. Would have bought it through amazon if my teacher didn’t force me through webassign.

THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL BECAUSE I CAN USE IT FOR 3 CALCULUS CLASSES. IT ARRIVED CLEAN AND NEW. I HAVE PUT SO MANY SIDE NOTES IN THIS … IT IS WONDERFUL

  7. Alice (verified owner) –

Needed it for my Calculus lectures and it’s super helpful for practice. It does a good job of explaining and the extra practice is good. If you don’t understand something it would best to use the textbook and practice even if you don’t want to. I also rented the manual out as well for the chapter question answers, it’s a pair that you’ll need if you decide to practice.

This book focuses on the important aspects of calculus. Aptly named, you are guided to learn the essentials of calculus.

It covers Calculus 1 through Calculus 3.
